1877-1896

The Golden Age

1877

Sir Vicar-ul-Umar Bahadur, inspired by polo matches in England, brought the sport to Hyderabad, establishing the foundations of the city’s polo legacy.

1878

The first organised polo season in Hyderabad featured five purpose-built grounds and a stable of 50 Arabian horses.

1896

Winston Churchill and other visiting teams praised Hyderabad’s exceptional sportsmanship and passion for polo.

1949-1976

Challenges & Revival

1949

Following World War II, Hyderabad’s polo grounds supported the war effort, leading to a temporary setback for the sport.

1956

The Andhra Pradesh Riding Club was formed to ensure equestrian sport remained alive in Hyderabad.

1974

The club’s riding teams reignited national attention with outstanding performances, cementing Hyderabad’s reputation.

1976

The Hyderabad Polo Association was established, reinforcing the city’s commitment to investing in equestrian infrastructure.

2005-Present

Modern Renaissance

2005

HPRC’s modern facilities were inaugurated to nurture fresh talent and restore Hyderabad’s standing in Indian polo.

2014

HPRC teams continued their winning streak at the Arena Polo Championship, Mumbai Polo Season, and Indian Open.

2016

HPRC hosted the inaugural National Show Jumping Championship with over 200 horses and the country’s top riders.
